Sadaf: RTA 3D Printed Bus Stop

Introduction

‘Sadaf’, Arabic for seashell, is a 3D printed bus stop scheme developed by MEAN* (Middle East Architecture Network) for the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The project tests 3D printing for Dubai’s street infrastructure, starting with a bus stop.

The design is inspired by the form of the seashells found on the beaches of the city.
Seashells grow by adding layer upon layer of material, and 3D printing builds in the same way.

The bus stop is designed to be panelized in pieces, each sized to fit the build volume of industrial 3D printers. Every piece is different and interlocks with its neighbor, so the structure is designed to be put together without formwork. The RTA brief called for 2,000 bus stop locations across the city; the modules could be transported to each one and assembled on site, giving Dubai's bus stops a shared identity.

ويختبر المشروع الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد في البنية التحتية لشوارع دبي، بدءاً بموقف الحافلات.

التصميم مستوحى من شكل الأصداف البحرية على شواطئ المدينة.

تنمو الأصداف البحرية بإضافة طبقة فوق طبقة من المادة، وعلى النحو نفسه تبني الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد.
صُمّم موقف الحافلات مقسّماً إلى ألواح، حُدّد حجم كل منها ليتّسع له حيّز الطباعة في الطابعات الصناعية ثلاثية الأبعاد.

كل قطعة تختلف عن الأخرى وتتعشّق مع جارتها، فصُمّم الهيكل ليُجمَّع من دون قوالب. وحدّد موجز هيئة الطرق والمواصلات ٢٠٠٠ موقع لمواقف الحافلات في أنحاء المدينة، ويمكن نقل الوحدات إلى كل منها وتجميعها هناك، لتمنح مواقف الحافلات في دبي هويةً مشتركة.
